What Are HPLC and MS Tests for Research Peptides?

Understand what HPLC purity and mass spectrometry identity tests can—and cannot—show when qualifying a research peptide batch.
Two tests answer different questions
HPLC commonly supports an assessment of chromatographic purity, while mass spectrometry can support molecular identity. They are complementary rather than interchangeable. A credible review connects each reported claim to the method that actually evaluates it.
How to review an HPLC package
Look for the sample or lot identifier, test date, method context, chromatogram, integration and reported result. Consider whether unknown or excluded peaks are explained. A percentage copied onto a COA without traceable supporting context is weaker evidence.
How to read MS information
Compare the expected molecular information with the observed result and confirm that the tested sample matches the offered lot. MS evidence supports identity but should not be used alone to claim purity, sterility, endotoxin status or exact vial content.
Use a risk-based release review
The required test panel depends on specification and intended research workflow. Establish acceptance criteria before purchase, review deviations explicitly and retain the supplier records with receiving information. Testing language should remain precise and avoid claims the data do not support.
